Access to the service

Referrals will be accepted from any source provided that the person referred or their representative has given permission. This may include a health care professional, social worker, family member, carer or self-referral. Any brain injured person living within the West Midlands is elegible to apply for this service.

We suggest that before submitting a referral, you call to chat to the service Manager firstly to ensure that the criteria is met and that the service is what the individual requires.

Upon return of a Referral Form, Headway will invite the brain injured person and referrer/carer into Headway for a first interview.

There is a placement charge for this service, so funding may be required or payment through Individual Budgets/Trust Funds.

CRITERIA
for accessing Services for people with ABI
  • the applicant is recovering from an acquired brain injury
  • they wish to attend
  • they are ready for social re-integration and would benefit from the opportunities given
  • they are medically ready
  • they can cope with an active social environment
  • the individual is able to travel the distance to & from the centre
  • they are at least aged 16
  • the person’s behaviour is manageable

This basic list helps make an initial decision on the suitability of the clients, though if the client is interviewed more information will be obtained and the criteria will be looked at in more detail.

People with a progressive illness are unfortunately not eligible for Headway's services.

If someone does not meet the criteria due to high care needs or unmanageable behaviour, it is still possible that following assessment, we may accept them if they can have a 1 to 1 carer worker to accompany them.

There are a limited number of places available at our services and we sometimes have to operate a waiting list for specific programmes/activities. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

If we are unable to offer a place we will endeavour to provide you with information about other appropriate services.

We are committed to equal opportunities and actively work towards ensuring our services are accessible to any member of the community who has an acquired brain injury.
