Services for people with acquired brain injury (ABI)
Headway
provides a social environment where people with an acquired
brain injury can be understood and meet others who have
experienced similar problems. We strive to maintain a relaxed
and friendly environment, whilst at the same time introduce
structure and re-learning opportunities to help individuals
achieve goals and re-gain self esteem. The service currently
offers a variety of programmes & activitiestailored
to suit different needs and levels of recovery. Each
programme covers a large selection of activities including Core
Sessions (areas directly related to brain injury) in
each programme. We are currently able to offer 10 days of
services based at Headway House in Moseley
and Leighton House in Rubery and other services in the community also at the weekend and evenings. The services areavailable
to people with acquired braininjury
who will usually have completed formal clinical rehab (physio,
OT etc). At this stage many people may still be unable
to return to work, but are ready to start to re-integrate
back into the community.
Individual needs will differ at this stage, so this service
aims to provide the opportunity to:-

skills - education, cognitive & social
learn coping/compensation
strategies
acquire new interests/skills
meet with other brain
injured people
learn how to modify
behaviour problems
receive guidance & support
improve self confidence
and self esteem
access community activities
avoid isolation & deterioration
Headway West Midland’s
Services for people with ABI is unique in that it specialises in
delivering a service tailored to suit the very specialised
needs of brain injured people.We have a Person Centered
approach which is based on each individual, their deficits
and needs. We then identify what choices we can offer
to meet their specific requirements. All the services focus
on the improvement & management of skills for each individual from the moment
they arrive each day until they go home. Each person’s
care package is fully comprehensive and outcome based to
include:-
User involvement and feedback
Ongoing monitoring and assessment
of BI related areas
Addressing their holistic requirements
Attending activity sessions and core skills
Accessing advice, information & support
Close links and involvement of
family/care team including reviews
re-integration into the community
enabling people to meet their optimum levels
Each new person will have:
Person Centred assessment
Copy of Care Plan
Timetable of activities/support etc
Assessment Tools (where required)
Outcome Tracker
Individual Client Record
Individual Keyworker or Support Worker
Headway
services for people with ABI provide a stepping stone back into the
community, enabling brain injured people to lead a
more independent and socially integrated life.
Availability
of activities will vary according to programme changes,
days required and vacancies.
This
services is ongoing for as long as the person continues
to benefit from attending.
