Brain Injury Awareness Event for BME communities
20 May 2010 at St Paul’s Community Development Trust, Balsall Heath, B12
Individuals, carers and professionals working with local Black and Minority Ethnic communities turned up to Headway WM’s Brain Injury Week event on 20 May in Balsall Heath.
Those attending received information from local treatment, support and carers’ services. Sameera Hamid, BME Worker provided a talk on ‘What is Brain Injury?’ and Headway WM services, with a particular focus on how Headway WM supports BME individuals and families through language and culturally sensitive support. Moor Green Brain Injury Specialist Clinic also provided an introductory talk on their services along with an interactive Tai Chi demonstration for all present.
Along with information, the event also provided mehndi hand painting, a Brain Game competition, and an ethnic lunch for participants. The venue was also host to a City Farm.
As well as raising awareness of Headway WM services and Brain Injury, the event provided an excellent opportunity for networking with other organisations and discussing ways of working together to support Brain Injured persons, families and carers, particularly those from BME communities.

Hats for Headway Day Fundraising
Holland House Infant School, Nursery and Children’s Centre, Sutton Coldfield
21 May 2010
Community Services’ BME Worker Sameera Hamid attended Holland House Infant School on Friday 20 May 2010 to deliver a talk to staff and pupils on ‘head and accident safety’. The talk was delivered to support the school with their ‘Hats for Headway Day’, which saw staff and pupils wear hats to school in return for a donation towards the Headway WM charity.
Sameera, whose daughter attends the school, encouraged the children to report all head injuries to adults, and provided advice on road, car seat, cycling and sporting safety. The talk was also accompanied by a handout to all parents on advice following a head injury.
The school and Children’s Centre raised £150 for Headway WM from fundraising on the day.
Headway WM would like to thank staff, pupils, and parents associated with Holland House Infant School and Nursery for joining in with the spirit of the day, and for raising these much needed funds for Headway WM. The money raised will help fund community services for people with Brain Injury, their families and their carers.

Paul runs the London Marathon

A very well done and many thanks to Paul Cornock who successfully completed this years Virgin London Marathon, raising in excess of £500 for Headway WM.
Despite getting severe cramp in both calf muscles at the 18 mile point, he battle on in pain to finish in 4 hours 58 mins 14 and then still had to walk to the station to get back to the hotel. What a trouper!
Paul said “It was a brilliant day As my name was printed on my shirt, I could hear it being called out all the way by the crowd and that kept me going to the end. Getting the medal around my neck & the T shirt afterwards was the icing on the cake”.
The reason for Paul choosing Headway is because it is very close to his heart, after suffering an aneurysm himself in 1970 at the age of seven. Paul was very lucky and the leak was stopped, but leaving Paul having to learn to walk again following many months in hospital.
The company that Paul works for, Alcoa Europe FRP- based in Kitts Green, was kind enough to donate £350 towards the sponsorship from their community fund.
